How to use the Search Type

1) Any Words

The 'Any Words' type is used to search names and titles of listings in the departmental directory that contain any of the words entered in the 'Search for' box. This search is most commonly used when you are unsure of how the listing may be entered. This type of search will generally return a large number of results.

Example:
Search for: info tech
Location: TTU

Can Return:

  • Information Technology Division (has info and tech)
  • AccessTech (has tech)
  • Appointments & Information (has info)
  • Center for Biotechnology and Genomics (has tech)

2) All Words

The 'All Words' type is used to search names and titles in the departmental directory that contain all of the words entered in the 'Search for' box. This search is used when you want to limit the results of the search. This search will return a smaller set of results than the 'Any Words' search.

Example:
Search for: art sci
Location: TTU

Can Return:

  • ARTS and SCIENCES, COLLEGE of (has art and sci)
  • COLLEGE of ARTS & SCIENCES (has art and sci)

3) Exact Phrase

The 'Exact Phrase' type is used to search name and titles of listings in the departmental directory that contain an exact match of the words and spaces in the search string (whole words, in the same order, but not case sensitive). This type will NOT search on parts of a word as in the other two search types. This type of search is used when you know the name of the listing you are searching for. This search will return the smallest set of results.

Example:
Search for: athletic business office
Location: TTU

Can Return:

  • Athletic Business Office (has athletic business office)
